The hair slickin' did it for me.
Dear Sarah,
You have my vote. Because when I saw your little girl holding her baby brother, licking her hand and trying without hope to slick down his fluffy baby head I knew you must be a great leader. I saw a kid that had been taught to make-do. That's my kinda kid and her parents must have shown her this little trick in desperate moments when living under the careful watch of the public eye.
My hat is off to you lady.
I have never enjoyed listening to a political rally speech, until I heard you.
Thanks Sarah for finally putting a human face in this whole election thing for me. Oh, and one more thing.....Clay thinks your cute.
Respectfully and Admirably,
April

Amen!!!
hey! Kathi (the poster before me)took my Amen! right out of my mouth
Our family totally agrees..
Sara is GREAT!
what they said...
Time to use the old noggin and vote for policy and experience rather than hair slickin'. It's the Amen attitude that got us GW in the White House. He never uses his noggin either.
Well her hubby ain't bad either. Just sayin'.
I'll add a amen

I'm all for down to earth, real people that take up most of this country, not the glamorized, fake presence that fills our TV screens, magazines we read, music we hear and on the internet.
di, face it, Sarah knocked it out of the park last night. AND will continue to do so.
It's funny how she got her point across without getting nasty or insulting anyone. Unlike most of the others who are in the game. She seems classy and real and I love her hair. I'm more excited now about the election than I have been for the past year.
She is definitely a breath of fresh air!

I totally thought I was in the minority.
I LOVED Sarah Palin. She's real. That bit with the spit slicked back hair...priceless. I adore her and her family. Warts and all.
She kicked butt last night.
Amen! I thought it was a great way to meet Sara and her family. I love the Hockey Mom pit bull remark too! She's a tough lady who knows how to make things happen and this country needs that. About time women took over.
OMGOSH! The hand licking/hair smoothing is what did it for me, too! I posted my opinion of Palin on my blog the SECOND the camera honed in on that moment.
:)

I agree, I kept thinking, that is my kid, my kid does that all the time. We have something in common!
I enjoyed her speech last night so much...and he family seems delightfully normal.
I like Sarah Palin too, but for me the real question is with her in the govoners mansion or white house and the husband busy in the oil industry, who is raising the family? Is the coming grandchild evidence of missing parental oversight or just bad luck.I guess we all have to decide which is more important family or career/
I actually sat up in bed and cheered during her speech. I haven't been this energized about politics in a while.
To anon: If she is elected I am pretty sure dad will come to Washington. I got pregnant at 17 and it was NOT due to my parents not being there or bad luck. IT was due to me being 17 and making a very bad choice.
Darnit, I didn't watch last night, and my mom said Gov. Palin was very interesting to listen to!
The moment with the hand slicking the baby's hair was priceless. BUT, this woman wanted to ban books from her local library. So it's a huge no from me. A real deal breaker. Not that I was planning to vote for McCain anyway.
I was waiting to "really" like her until after the speech. I've waited long enough. I like her. The moment with the little girl and the spit made my heart sing with joy. This woman and her family are completely relatable. It doesn't get much better than that.
I'm such a fan! I was on the fence, but now I'm sold :)
ick, she scares my uterus.
That hair slickin' was precious. I believe that Sarah will show those guys in DC a thing or two. Finally a woman in politics that you can really root for!!
http://www.areavoices.com/farside/
I like her too, but she won't be getting my vote. For me, her stand against abortion is a deal breaker.
The fact that her teenage daughter is pregnant doesn't bother me or that as a mom she'll be away from her family for long periods of time (her husband will be there).
A woman has just as much "right" to run this country as a man, in fact a woman could probably do it better. I applaud her and no matter who wins, she has earned my respect.
Yes, who is raising the family...the other children that always seem to be the ones on camera tending to their baby brother?
And how sad is it that Sarah has placed her pregnant daughter in the spotlight. I had my daughter at age 19, was unwed, but did then marry the father. I would have been embarassed to death had my mother put me under a national spotlight.
And do you know that Sarah supports and participates in the aerial hunting of wolves and bears in her own state. Watch the movie about it on Youtube... it's disgusting and inhumane. This to me says a lot about the woman, to hunt down animals from the air and watch them writhe in pain inhumanely because the first couple of shots does not kill them.
Sarah would do absolutely nothing for you if McCain is elected. The VP of this country holds no power... they are simply a figurehead that attends funerals, etc. She was not fully vetted by McCain. Watch as more negative facts surface about her. Have you, Miss anonymous, even done your own vetting of Ms. Palin, or do you just like her lipstick remark and find that a good enough reason to vote for her... get real folks.
She's not taking over anything unless McCain dies in office. And then there's the gal that loves Sarah because of her hair. OMG. Time to vote for a candidates policies and not act like a bunch of ninnies over one political speech since we all know that political speeches are generally a pack of lies. I've been around the block a few times in life and just not falling for her cutie pie speech.
She does have really great hair though
AMEN to YOU DI. Glad to know I am not the only one paying attention out here.
Yes, she has great hair. So does my dog. Ruff Ruff...lol
Little Piper had us at 'hair slicking' !!
Mother of God...sold because her daughter knows how to slick down hair with spit? If that's the case...raise my grandmother from the dead and give her Condi's job!
Thank you Di. Sarah's speech did nothing but jab at the opponent. What matters was not mentioned. The economy, the middle class, college prices, etc... She didn't even write 3/4 of that speech. Bush's old speech writer did long before she was even chosen.
Come on people, do your homework. That is not spoken as a liberal, democrat or republican. I don't make my decision by party. I make my decision by whom I think will do the best job.
Amen Di! I am completely speechless at the fact that people are making their voting decision based on a 5 year old slicking down a babies hair. No wonder this country is in the horrible shape that it is.
I love her too, and everything that she stands for. Hunting and anti-abortion stance and all.
PS. and I love her hair.
... and lipstick.
You should be ashamed, Di and supporters. Instead of just getting excited for an election, why do you have to be bitchy about it? Who I vote for is NOBODY'S business, and I agree with April. I read this blog because April makes me laugh. Let's take politics out of this...
Amen Stephanie!
April's just out and out a nut, and she's funny, and her kids are cute.
Wooo! Some folks have NO sense of humor! Yikes! I see what yer getting at there April - spit-slickin is something you just don't see often in the political arena. You see LOTS of spit and LOTS of slickness - but not often together. It's refreshing. And it has nothing whatsoever to do with politics people! ;)
Respectfully,
the other
I too...read Aprils blog because she is unbeeeelievably funny.
Unfortunately, this election is VERY important and while I am not a person that lives and breathes politics, I am very passionate about this election. It is VERY important to the U.S.
And I have run into too many women who vote without substance that it makes me nuts. The biggest one is, "Ohhh, I just vote for who my husband votes for". grrrrrr
I learned early in life not to talk politics, religion and abortion.
Consider the Cube Monkey's mouth taped, because I really do love your blog April and as an American, you have the right to your opinion. =)
April, I think your post is cute!
Have a great day =)
Really? You'd vote for someone because his VP nominee's daughter slicked back the hair of her brother?
Yikes...
I have to say this, I just can't shut up... Obama has not any Political Expierence! He flip Flops, (it's in his records read THEM!) He BIG INSURANCE break, it's for children and old people only. if your between 18 and 65 your screwed again. READ ABOUT IT. Joe Biden hasn't done squat, Read about it! McCain, well you know if he dies, he dies trying! He has more everything in his little finger than all the other canidates. I don't agree 100% with him, but I don't agree 100% with anyone. As for Sarah, She's great. Read about her. Have you been to Alaska? Have you seen what wild animals that ae over populating the state can do? Have you? She has gone up against other Republicans and won. She does the right thing whether its popular or not ans doesn't care what the PRESS will say. As for her children, one leaving for Irac, one going to have a baby at 17 2 other bright little girls and a baby with downs. How much more American can you get? Or, unless your one of those that my shit doesn't stink and we make our daughters have abortions because it might ruin their life or worse yet people might talk about us.
I'm sorry April, I didn't mean to go on. I LOVE your Blog and anyone that didn't get what you were saying was a funny just doesn't get it. And it was funny, I thought the same thing, I think I might have shed a tear. Though I wished that baby was in his bed.
I'm glad other people got my hair thing - like I'd vote for someone based on her hair. Wow. People scare me. You may want to lighten up a little or go get a hug.
Having said that, I'd rather watch her on the news first thing in the morning than ever wake up and look at Hilary - woof!
Okay this was a funny post, April. It made me laugh yesterday. It makes me sad however that so many people want to overlook the obvious humor and say this is why others like Palin, that she has no real substance and they couldn't possibly like her for more than her looks and her cute family. Apparently they want so badly to believe that anyone who thinks differently from them is stupid and could not possibly have well-thought out reasons for supporting the other candidate. I may not agree with someone's political leanings, but I really try to refrain from calling their choices stupid and frivolous.
Furthermore, as someone who was once in a very similar position to Bristol Palin, I would say the national spotlight is nothing compared to being the big news in a small town. Can you imagine what the talk would have been if she had kept her mother from accepting McCain's offer, not to mention the guilt? Just another example of how opinions and perceptions can differ. I don't think Di is stupid for feeling otherwise, but I can tell you it wouldn't have made much of a difference to me. Sometimes you just have to accept that others are going to have different opinions and it doesn't necessarily make either of you wrong or stupid.
I wonder if anyone asked Obama who would be home taking care of the children while he was away and Michelle was away.
That is such a sexist comment that everytime I hear it my mouth just drops.
All you people who seriously think April's voting based on the spit slinking need to get a sense of humor. Go back and read her other posts and you will see that this is her sense of humor.
Lighten up. It's a blog.
I thought it was a cute post and for some, the fact that she has such a relatable family might just be what tipped them over when they were pretty much 99% sure they were voting for McCain/Palin anyway.
And just like you're entitled to your opinion, others here are, too. Just because they don't believe the same way you do doesn't make them wrong. Just someone with a difference of opinion.
And I meant to type "slicking" not "slinking".
Cause God forbid someone read my comment and take me to task for a typo.
Here via Homesteading Neophyte...
Love your post. Shocked at the comments!
But I do want to say one thing that fact that her daughter is pregnant only makes me respect her more. No not b/c her daughter got knocked up, but b/c she has had to fact the realities of an unplanned pregnancy and still holds firm to her stance on abortion. I was once in her daughters place.
I am going to refrain from political commentary and say: April your post is hysterical! I love that you see the homey-ness in someone as a good quality.
Amen! I like Sarah Palin too and thought the hair slickin' was adorable. What has left me totally flummoxed has been the reaction against her because she is a woman with children.
Hmm, to be honest...her hair scares me too.
I think this here blog is funny. And it definitely is sad to see such divisiveness but sadly, that's the way our country has been for the last 16 years. I would like to see that change.
One comment that bugged me a bit and hopefully you don't mind me sharing this here. Wolves and polar bears and/or most other indigenous Alaskan species are not over populating Alaska. Research (actual college trained PhD researchers doing the research) proves otherwise. Aerial hunting of wolves and removing the polar bear from the endangered species list are both based on politics and not science. One more thing, so maybe some will get my rant as being legit-- I live, breath, and earn money as a wildlife biologist/ researcher.
What a hard working women. I am so glad he chose Sarah Palin. I was not going to vote for John Mccain I was going to vote against Obama. Now I can cast my vote. The press has gone over the top in bashing her.
How can the PROGRESSIVES put Sarah down. Just wandering if Senator Pelosi has been put on the spot for leaving her children?
Di said "And do you know that Sarah supports and participates in the aerial hunting of wolves and bears in her own state." Do you, Di, know that Obama supports the killing of BABIES? When are we going to stop putting animals before people?
I am using my old, educated noggin and am voting for policy and experience and I won't be pulling the lever for Obama.
Whoa April! Hey - you're still my favorite blogger.
I liked Sarah's speech and I like her, but I keep hearing this weird thing about her banning books in her hometown public library. As a former and recovering librarian and a woman who loves her books - that really, really bugs me. But so far I haven't been able to find anything about it except she made some phone call to her local library when she was mayor and asked if she could ban books and was told no, she could not. Maybe I will find the rest of the story later...
I am still on the fence here, but I think we have a better group of candidates running in this year's election than we have had in a long long time. I honestly admire all of them for different reasons.
April, I'm sorry that you actually have readers who think you are stupid enough to base your vote on a darling little girl spit-shining her brother's precious little head. Personally, I thank the Good Lord that I can see humor in life. I think humorless people should probably be reading other more politically-correct, unfunny blogs. Keep on being yourself - that's why your humorous readers love you!! Jaki : )
For the person who said they can't believe people are making a decision based on a kid spitting on hair - at least they are paying attention!
If you want the real reason this country is in a mess it is because for too long we have all set back and let the minority (as in a few not a race) make decisions.
For the person who said it was sad she put her 17 year old daughter in the public eye - you kidding me! She should give up the nomination for Vice President of the United States because a 17 year old got pregnant!
For those of you who can't see her in the job because she should be at home - the majority of us work to feed our kids and pay the bills. Her family apparently is doing pretty well with the parenting they are getting.
And finally - if you are going to assume that she hasn't been a good mother because her teenager is pregnant - that makes a whole lot of bad mothers in this country.
This woman isn't perfect but she is smart, tough and I agree - the hair slickin' did it for me!
Great Post! Love your blog. You keep me laughing....love that!
I'm a farmers wife from Indiana, swing over to my blog sometime.
Blessings, Milah
My favorite part was after she licked her hand and was smoothing down the hair on her bro's head.
It was the look of horror on her face like, "Holly crap balls! What the hell did I just lick off my hand?" Those mooseburgers sure leave a nasty aftertaste.
wow i have been gone for a bit ...sick ,my dog died , hurricane and i finlly get back on to do some catch up reading and the election is being decided over a lil girl spit licking on her lil brothers head...well i personally made up my mind when i found out she was from a pentecostal background...oooh im going to get hmmered for that one i bet ...April you keep up the great work ...humor is what keeps us all alive and laughter is always the best medicine for anything , even political indifference!!!! GOD BLESS!!!
April...I love your blog, and appreciated the humor in this post!
As an Alaskan, I just wanted to clarify a few things for folks:
1. The only reason Bristol's pregnancy was made public was because the rumor-mongers were claiming that Trig, Sarah new baby, was actually Bristol's-and that Sarah had claimed the baby as her own to cover the "family shame."
2. Aerial hunting for wolves and bears does not include polar bears...in the region referred to, there are just grizzlies (otherwise known as brown bears). And while I don't know the specifics for the arctic region, I know that where I live, and around Anchorage, the bear population is getting out of control.
3. In my humble opinion, the lives of unborn babies are far more important than the lives of wolves and bears. I can only imagine the outrage some would have if rather than aerial hunting, it was proposed that pregnant bears and wolves were knocked out so that their babies were killed in utero..how inhumane, how cruel that those darling babies not have the choice to grow up and romp across the tundra! Yet those who would be outraged consciously support and vote for politicians who support the same inhumane treatment for human babies.
4. Sarah has done a lot for this state, is by far the best governor we've had in years, and as a potential vice president has more leadership experience than Obama running for president!
5. If nothing else, at least she levels the "minority" playing field for this election. I'm afraid that many people would vote for Obama b/c he would be the first black president, not because he's the one most capable of the job.
6. Sarah's not perfect, neither is her family...none of the rest of us are, either! At least she's got principles.
I thought
Please don't talk about her clothes.
Please don't wonder at her child minding skills.
Please don't criticize her voice.
Please listen to her speech and make an informed choice.
Please look at her record.
Please don't talk about her husband.
but then Hillary was beaten ....
and now Palin is getting the same kind of treatment.
Now I say the same things as above but I also say Please don't think possession of a body part is going to make me vote for her.
All in all this entire election process has insulted me as a woman.
But the spit pomade was a great shot.
I am 49 years old and while growing up, I never knew my parents political preferences.
The words democrat or republican were used as adjectives in our home, not nouns. My parents never identified themselves with any label, allowing the freedom to vote for a person not an idealogy.
We were taught that the important thing in America was casting your vote. An educated vote. We were taught to research and have FACTS to back up our stance. Not by a picture or a feeling.
These days, people think that the election is a chance to spout their OWN political rhetoric, instead of making an informed decision on who will lead this country.
How many of you know the records of the two canditates? If they suddenly became the "other" party, ala Joe Lieberman, would you disavow them?
These elections have become no more than rival high school teams with the players going out for pizza after the game, but the fans throwing eggs at each others cars.
We have allowed ourselves to be pitted against each other because of our political views instead of united in our belief on the value of being a citizen of the United States of America. (the un-United States, perhaps?)
Where is the civility? The allowance of differences? I cannot abide the tone of "you're either with me or against me and if you're against me YOU'RE WRONG!
Frankly, you have the right to your opinion, but remember: just like a**holes, everyone has one.
