Corn Slurp

Daisy and Clay TLA



I went to the store today.  Checked every single dadgum label and came home with one product with high fructose corn syrup in it.  I didn't have another alternative at the store.  I was in Aldi.

Can you guess what it was? 

Here's some of what I bought,

Yogurt
Bread
Can of black beans
Milk
Chips
Oatmeal
Cereal


Only one of these items had HFCS.

probably the bread, but depending on the type of chips, type of oatmeal (if it was instant packet type it most likely had it), or the type of cereal. Any of those would have it in there, unless you shop for it in the hippie section, which last time I was in an Aldi's (8+ years ago) they didn't have that. They just had cheap, cheap, and did you bring a quarter for the cart so you could use it and did you bring something to put it all in. Used to shop there all the time when I lived in the midwest.

I just checked.....well my daughter just checked the yogurt in the fridge and it has HFCS in it. Well YUCK!! I have known for sometime now that HFCS is nasty stuff, but it is in just about everything we consume. Scary stuff!

It's the bread, they use it as a moistener. It's close to imposssible to find a bread without it, especially if you are looking for a whole wheat. I believe that the Pepperidge Farms whole wheat doesn't have HFCS.

Bravo April ... good for you in eliminating HFCS from your family's diet. It's hard to find products that DON'T have it ... they sneak it in everything. I made the commitment to change the way my family eats. It takes some work and planning, but it's worth the efforts.
My guess is the bread ... I finally found a local bakery that I can trust, or else I make it myself.

Checked the bread, Arnold Rye has it but Arnold 100% Whole Wheat doesn't. However it does have raisin juice extract, sugar & molasses.

I think it was the bread... unless you have a store that sells fresh baked, it's really hard to find it without HFCS

Either the bread or the yogurt. I have been trying to eliminate HFCS from our diet too. I have had more success with bread (I have to buy it at Trader Joe's though). Yogurt has been trickier...

YOGURT!!! I like to buy Kefir now, which is like a yogurt milk, sweetened with pure cane juice. You can find it at most grocrey stores now (except Aldi) in the organic milk/egg section. It's super yummy, and drinkable, and provides all the good probiotics and stuff that's in yogurt. It is a first-thing in the morning staple for my two-year-old, who climbs into my bed each morning and says "Wefir, okay" until I get her some.

I'm saying the beans, too. You know, when you ask for "sugar" in your coffee at retail places, they often use corn syrup. It's so nasty in that form--but I think looking out for it is something that I can try to do.

Well, pretty much any one of them could have HFCS. Any hints on brands?

BTW, what's the association with this post and a picture of Pig n' Clay?

Bread.
You can put lipstick on a pig and it's still a pig. I wonder what high fructose corn syrup would do for it. Is HFCS in sausage?

I have no idea! You have to tell us! I broke down last night & had some too - in ketchup! What else was I supposed to dip my sweet potato wedges in??

I have not a clue. Please don't say the beans though cause we had some yesterday and I didn't read the label.

I would guess the bread or yogurt. We have cut HFCS from our diet too. We actually buy our bread at Costco now b/c they make a fabulous whole grain bread with no HFCS. And it's untder $2 a loaf to boot. We also switched to organic yogurt to get away from HFCS and aspertame.

Probably the bread. I have a hard time finding any brand of bread that doesn't have any high fructose corn yuck in it. And that's the whole grain healthy ones.
Either that, or the yogurt.

Like Mama Dawg, I also guess the black beans. The bread is obvious, which is why I suspect those otherwise healthy beans.

You just can't trust anything you don't grow and prepare yourself, I guess. Dang.

I also found HFCS-free bread at Wal-Mart. Yay!
