Chick Chick Chick

We got baby chicks this weekend.

To prepare for them Clay and I pulled an old lambing crib out of the lean-to, drug it in the barn and proceeded to 'Heitschmidtize' it.

Heitschmidtize- (verb) to pull together crap that is lying around your property to function in whatever capacity your immediate need dictates.

Then we headed out to the local farm supply store and picked out our chicks like they were donuts. "Um, yeah, I'll take four of those black ones and two, no wait, um, give me, yeah, yeah, two of the Buff Orpingtons, and what's that one? Hmmm, yeah, okay, I'll take four of those....". It was quite fun. We came home with 16 little peeping machines.

We looked at how much space they took up in the tiny carton and decided to scrap the 'Heitschmidtized' crib and stick them in a big plastic tub.

I have 16 chickens in my basement.

Next on the agenda, turkeys.

Turkeys make great pets. Only thing is, they're remarkably stupid. Be prepared.

Ok, here's a question from a "city girl"...what are you going to do with all those chicks?

I think turkeys are terrifying, personally.

Yeah!! You have chickens. I'm so excited. But turkeys? I don't know much about them so I'll have to wait to get excited. 16 chicks! Wow. Are they noisey? I can't wait to see pictures. Now, how will Preacher do with them? He's not going to eat them or chase them, is he? I'll take him off your hands if that happens. We don't have chicks or turkeys here.

I find the clucking of chickens to be very soothing. They are very mellow creatures, in my experience. But no roosters. LOL THOSE make noise that induce me to jam ice picks in my ears. There were a couple of roosters on the grounds of the hotel we stayed at on our honeymoon and they drove me BONKERS with all the crowing.

I would recommend that you get no toms when it comes turkey time. When it's mating season the toms are not very discriminating and will kill all your chicken hens in an effort to mate with them. My friends lost about 80 hens this summer due to horney tom turkeys. They just got 100 babies as replacements last week but they won't be laying until the fall.

Funny. We kept our chicks in a big plastic watering trough that was used for our cows. It worked perfect up until they began to fly out. We kept them in the garage at that point with the heat lamp. Fun times.

Did you get any with custard filling? Jelly filled? How 'bout some with sprinkles?

I'm not letting my daughter see this post. It's enough that she has a friend with chickens that she can visit.

Chicks sound fun but turkeys are just plain scary.
