That Homeschool Song Guy

A long time ago I posted the homeschool song by Tim Hawkins. Today when I was talking to my sister, Rechelle, she was giving me her daily dose of, "I HATE HOMESCHOOLERS" because she sees nothing redeeming in a homeschooled child or family or mother....basically she hates all things homeschool.

I want to make her a t-shirt that says HOMESCHOOLERS SUCK ! And you know, I think she would wear it.

Anyway I told her I was going to write a post dedicated to her all about the love of a homeschooled child and she said, "Why don't you just post another video by that weird home school guy that thinks his kids are so great?"

And so I did.

She didn't realize Tim Hawkins is a comedian and that video was doing what she does so well......MAKING FUN OF HOMESCHOOLERS!!!! Jazus, Joseph and Murray, Rechelle! Oh, and Rechelle, I love you almost as much as I love Jesus an homeschooling.

i didn't watch the video yet, but wanted to leave a comment. the other day when she posted about the difficulties of getting her youngest on the bus on time with out killing him, i suggested that she homeschool him. she seems to be a closet homeschooler, anyway, right? i think that she's ignoring me!

Jennifer,
Rechelle is homeschooling her children better than me, I'm just scared to tell her that, she might do something violent.

My Grandpa used to say that he hated dogs, but then when no one was looking he would love on them...

I'm just saying.

I love that guy! Because we are the only other family in the world not hooked up to cable, we've got 40 gazillion Christian channels through our little converter box. (Not complaining, by the way; we were just surprised.) Tim Hawkins has a way of coming on at the end of my longest, most challenging days when I'm ready to collapse in bed. I find myself watching, laughing hysterically at EVERYTHING he says. He does a great bit about helpful parent advice (like telling your kids "careful" after they've run smack into the side of a table...yep, that's me).

Good clean comedy is hard to come by.

About homeschooling...for my family, right after hell freezes over, we'll look into it. I'm unmotivated, my kids are stubborn, and we'd all rather have a picnic. More power to those who make it work, though.

Rechelle doesn't like homescoolers~ Dang. I'm in trouble. I thought the coldness I felt from her when I commented was just the weather here....hmmmm....
I agree with Jennifer that Rechelle is a closet homeschooler. They call them "after schoolers" because they homeschool after school....get it? I mean all those tea experiments are more than I do in my homeschool!! I just make my kid read Rechelles blog and call it school....

Oh my God, Cletus take the reel. Made me laugh so so hard. Thanks!

I'm a reformed homeschooler, otherwise known as a quitter, a pansy, a wimp, a wuss, a flake, and just not very dedicated to my children and their education. They made me turn in my denim jumper and everything. Rechelle, however, really is homeschooling her kids and just doesn't know it. If anyone ever deserved a denim jumper, it's her.

LOVE the comments.

Rechelle---
You are SO in for it now.

Thanks April for exposing your sister's underbelly!

Bwaa! Ha! Ha Ha!

April - You know I love homeschooling and I just wish I was HOLY enough to do it. Will you please visit my family in Hell someday as that is where we are going since I don't homeschool.

April and Rechelle,
You two are so funny!

Cletus take the Reel.

Oh my.

I especially like watching Cletus run.

Anonymous said...

Oh dear.
What kind of homeschoolers do you have out there in Kansas that they've traumatized poor Rechelle so?

Actually, I think I know, and they scare me too. That's why I'm a loner homeschooler for nineteen loooong years.

I love the video. And I also hate homeschoolers. I think they're women who are afraid of themselves who tend to have martyr complexes, mostly, and that they're cheating their children of normal lives and setting them up for failure in the real world.

But aside from that, it's just a peachy idea.

OK, maybe that was a little strong. I don't "hate" homeschoolers. But I happen to know quite a few, and unfortunately most of them are less than stellar examples of educators (with absolutely NO formal training--sometimes not even a single day of college in any subject). And I question their motives. But that doesn't mean some mothers' (and I use the word mothers on purpose, because it's usually mothers doing it) motives aren't good and pure. We are all trying to do the best we can for our families. I just don't think some homeschoolers have thought through the ramifications of what seems like a nice Utopian idea: I'll keep my kids at home, teach them great values and the alphabet and how to read and do fun science experiments and art and we'll learn social studies and take field trips and they'll grow up to be fabulous human beings. What will they do when they go to college and they've never seen anything that threatens their tidy ideal universe? I know that public school is fraught with peril, but so is life. And, if we are doing it right, we are ALL homeschooling to some degree (tea experiments, museum visits, baking muffins on Saturday morning). It's called parenthood. End of rant.

April Dawn, I want you to now that your sister is not anonymous though she understands where anonymous is coming from. I love you. Even when you are kind of mean at me. Now go line up all those babies and kiss them right down the row for me.

I am just thinking about my golds and whether or not to become a cheft.

Ms. Anonymous,

I don't know whether to bust my belt buckle laughing uproariously or to cry a few buckets of tears for you.

It's dangerous to generalize so generally about any group of people isn't it? I could certainly do the same about the government-schooled illiterate pregnant drug addicts. Do you know any of those?

Homeschooling has been around long enough now that there are quite a number of "graduates" in the population and how many grown former homeschool misfits do you know? I'm biting my tongue bloody to keep from contradicting you by telling you about my fabulously successful adult children who have never set foot in a government school. Two have blogs. One comments here too.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion and it was interesting to hear yours. Differences make the world go round.

Southern Gal said...

April, I bet you didn't realize what a can of worms you opened. I think Rechelle found out the hard way, too!

Hear, hear Clayvessel. Everyone has an opinion and is entitled to it. I'm sorry Anonymous doesn't like homeschoolers.

Just as a sidenote: I homeschooled my oldest from K4 through 12th grades. She is a sophomore in college and will be beginning clinicals in her chosen field, nursing, in the fall. I also have a son who was homeschooled all through school until this year. Twelfth grade in public school has been great for him. I've had every teacher tell me what a joy he is to have in their classes. He just got his acceptance letter to college in engineering and computing. I homeschool my youngest in first grade right now.

And guess what? I've done it all with absolutely NO formal training--not even a single day of college in any subject. Yep, that would be me.

The Lord blesses those who love Him and I know I am blessed in homeschooling.

My only defense is that I've done it all, homeschool, private school and public school.

I've seen crazy kids and parents in all those situations.

I'm just so happy we have the freedom to choose how we want to educate our children.

I'll never say that homeschooling is better or worse than any other form of education or that I detest the choice that others are making for their children, I'm not willing to take on those battles that have no end. But, I will commend any educator that is taking our young people and molding their minds by sharing their time and energy in a positive and loving environment which can happen at home or in a classroom.

@anonymous: Who the? What the?
@ Clayvessel....Word up. :)

I wondered what might have happened in the comments here, LOL.

April, your last comment is exactly how I feel about this. Of course, it's better coming from you since I am an uneducated hick without a lick of that fancy college larnin';o)

I was happy to discover your April Showers blog today. I was unable to find an email link in your profile. I hope it's OK that I'm contacting you through a public comment. I've developed an educational program for Windows called SpellQuizzer that helps children learn their spelling words without the battle that parents often have getting them to sit down and write them out while the parents dictate to them. The parent enters the child's spelling words into the software making a sound recording of each word. Then the software helps the child practice his or her words. It really helped my children with their weekly spelling lists.

I would appreciate your reviewing SpellQuizzer in April Showers. You can learn more about the program at http://www.SpellQuizzer.com. There's a video demo you can watch at http://www.spellquizzer.com/SpellQuizzer-Demo.htm. I'd be happy to send you a complimentary license for the software. Please let me know if you are interested.

Thank you very much!

This video is hysterical.
Why haven't I hear this guy before?

Oh, ha ha ha ha ha, cough. This guy is so funny. Wait. What is this post about? Oh, yeah, home schoolers. Well, let me see. In this great country, I pay hefty taxes to educate kids in public schools, enormous tuition fees to put my own kids through private schools and I also run a free google blog for those who need to learn how to home school their own children. Well, it looks like my pocket book loves children every bit as much as I do, April. I guess I will just keep paying until I'm dead. What else is left to do but this?

...cheating their children of normal lives and setting them up for failure in the real world.

I'm with that person. All the way. If I hadn't had been homeschooled, I would have had a normal life- instead of obtaining a job with an NGO based in Zürich and traveling the world working to improve education, housing, and overall life in developing countries. Yes, a normal life- instead of learning to speak German and Spanish. It's really too bad my siblings didn't have normal lives- instead of growing up to be professional electricians and concerto violinists that travel Europe with youth symphonies.

If only.

Eh...
and I just made homeschoolers look purdy dumb by saying "If I hadn't had been homeschooled"

Let me revise-
If I hadn't been...

Speaks volumes about proofreading.

I love this post!
I home school, one of my kids is 21 now and she is in the military and holds down a job. Not to scabby huh?
I think it's neat that everyone has an opinion even if it makes my tummy upset reading them. I want to read the ones you deleted. But then my tummy would really get upset!

ya'll are confused about home schooling. it's like BLOGGING! It's your home, your kids, and your life to do YOUR way! There are a lot of home schoolers out there who are not conventional and "holy.' crap haven't you guys heard of "unschooling?" Now I know why you don't visit me, your confused.

Gee, carsick, I, the author, deleted the posts not April, because I didn't want to use her blog as a platform.

Basically I was talking back to the anti-homeschooling posts. My post said that I'm a retired homeschooler and former state homeschool leader who has a college degree. My homeschooled kids are both in college. One is a nationally recognized scholar with a full academic scholarship to a respected university. The youngest graduated early and is off doing very well at college.

That said, I homeschooled in several different areas of the country and some places were better than others. Anymore, homeschoolers represent a microcosm of society. Rechelle is not alone in having homeschoolers make her feel like she's going to hell. I've had homeschoolers imply the same thing about me.

Remember when your Sarah Palin post about the sister lickin her hand and fixin the baby's hair stirred the pot like this one with the singing comedian? Never know what you're gonna stir up on this here blog, do you?

I've been homeschooling a pretty long time, long enough to laugh at myself and all the other homeschooling yee=haws that probably do give homeschooling a bad name.

My big beef with homeschoolers is this: the ones that make it their WHOLE identity. It's a means to an end, not a way of life!!!

Just my 2 cents.
